The Peninsula Home
Existing Residential Home– Demolition and Total Re-Build of Prestige Beachside Home
Having left my corporate development activities, I first bought this old house to ‘retire’ in at the ripe old age of 33. It was three roofs from the beach in the loveliest little Beach Court centred between the river and the sea. I always wanted to live on a Peninsula, and the fact that two of my favourite surf breaks were within a stone’s throw was a clincher. I paid cash for the home after selling my previous place for a huge tax-free profit, so with no debt it was a way of reducing non-business costs and simplifying. Life was good! It was an original brick and tile home, as the suburb was largely built out in the ‘70s-‘80s. The previous owner did a light cosmetic reno, though that turned out to be more spit than polish. Having just moved from a brand new absolute River Front Penthouse (see The Luxury Yacht) that we developed, my then wife wasn’t so happy with my post-retirement Bohemian vision. Then, when one of the kitchen draw fronts fell off while opening, she lost it. Still believing I could fix anything/anyone (well, trying) and that a happy wife meant a happy life, I relented. What started as a full reno, turned into a complete $800,000 re-build purpose designed for the site. It is a beautiful house that for a while was my family home. With four bedrooms, plus a granny flat that was converted into a media room, three bathrooms, a dressing room, three living areas, a huge street front home office, DLUG, and a plunge pool met by a mote that ran halfway around the house, it was nominated for many design awards.
